A very successful 2006 UK Cricket Tour!
The highlight of 2006 (so far!) for some of our learners was the life-changing experience of participating in a cricket tour to the UK! The boys from our Foundation School aged between 11 and 14 years were teamed up with boys from Pirates Cricket Club. The tour was arranged with the help of the UK Sparrow Schools Foundation and made possible through support from companies and individuals.

It was a whirlwind tour with 8 matches being played in a 12 day period. The team were hosted by UK schools and learnt a great deal about the English culture.

Sparrow’s participants were Thabo Nonyane, Marcus Nkwane, Thulani Sithole, Lebogang Phomodi, Sibongiseni Mswani, Tebogo Zulu, Mandla Tshabalala, Lucky Mabaso and Tshiamo Mhasenya.

They played fixtures at Winterfold House, Clifton College, Cranbrook School, King’s College School, St John’s Leatherhead, Dulwich Preparatory School, Dulwich College Prep School, Dulwich College and St John’s Beaumont School.

Sparrow Schools greatly appreciate and value the life experience and exposure that opportunities to travel internationally and to interact with other cultures bring. Of course these tours happen above and beyond our regular operations and require intensive preparation and planning.

On their return our boys exclaimed that they’ve been inspired and want to gain greater knowledge and skills to improve their game and join local cricket clubs.

We are extremely grateful to our supporters who make these opportunities possible. Without your support it would not be possible! We hope to take a Sparrow choir on tour to the UK in 2008.

Sparrow Schools has always prided itself on adjusting its focus to meet the ever-changing needs of its learners. With 10 years of democracy under our belt, the need for bridging tuition has diminished. This fact has promoted Sparrow Schools to readdress its focus areas. As of 2005, Sparrow Schools will dedicate itself entirely too educating disadvantaged, remedial and low functioning learners. This means that our High School academic and Foundation School bridging programmes will fall away. These programmes will be replaced with more special needs classes, and programmes focusing on skills training and including a learner support unit.
