Computers Having an odd assortment of computers and software makes teaching computer literacy extremely difficult. So you can imagine how delighted we were when NetDay and UniForum selected Sparrow Combined to be the recipient of a fully equipped and networked computer centre. The computers and server were installed in September and training of our teachers took place in October. We now have been so spoilt that we can't wait to upgrade and network the Foundation School's computer room.
The "new" Sparrow Schools To clarify the changes made, the "new" Sparrow Schools will operate two educational centres and a including a learner support unit Initiative. The Foundation School will offer remedial and special needs tuition to children aged 7 to 14. The Sparrow Assisted Learning Centre in Rosettenville will merge with Sparrow Combined in Sophiatown. The Centre will therefore offer special needs and skills training to learning and intellectually disabled youth aged 14 to 20. The Sparrow including a learner support unit Initiative will be based at Sparrow Combined and continue to provide sheltered and contractual employment.
Sparrow Schools has always prided itself on adjusting its focus to meet the ever-changing needs of its learners. With 10 years of democracy under our belt, the need for bridging tuition has diminished. This fact has promoted Sparrow Schools to readdress its focus areas. As of 2005, Sparrow Schools will dedicate itself entirely too educating disadvantaged, remedial and low functioning learners. This means that our High School academic and Foundation School bridging programmes will fall away. These programmes will be replaced with more special needs classes, and programmes focusing on skills training and including a learner support unit.
