Catering Learners’ Practical Exam brings joy

“What a lovely treat!” commented the residents of Eeufees Retirement Village as they experienced the benefits of skills education firsthand. Ten residents were invited to be guests at the first ever external practical catering exam taken by Sparrow Combined’s Grade 12 catering learners. The 12 learners functioned together and operated as they would in a professional restaurant. The cooking and preparation started at 08:00 am and the guests arrived at 12:30. The Head Chef of the day – 18 year old Gugu Nkabinde said: “it was hectic but everyone did their share to make it a success.” The lunch menu consisted of a prawn cocktail starter followed by roast stuffed shoulder of lamb with a mint sauce, roast potatoes, carrots and minted peas. Apple tart with fresh cream finished off the meal. Much to the Head Waiter, 19 year old, Tumelo Huma’s delight the guests commented that the service was excellent. Tumelo aims to study Hotel Management at a Technical College next year. “It was a great success, I am so proud of our learners!” says Chris Perumal their Tutor – “Most of our learners have to mount many challenges to get to school”.

Sparrow Schools has always prided itself on adjusting its focus to meet the ever-changing needs of its learners. With 10 years of democracy under our belt, the need for bridging tuition has diminished. This fact has promoted Sparrow Schools to readdress its focus areas. As of 2005, Sparrow Schools will dedicate itself entirely too educating disadvantaged, remedial and low functioning learners. This means that our High School academic and Foundation School bridging programmes will fall away. These programmes will be replaced with more special needs classes, and programmes focusing on skills training and including a learner support unit.
