How to get involved? Educate a Child…

Over 40% of SA children have inadequate parental care, little social stability or access to appropriate education. With a 91.7% attendance rate at educational institutions amongst 5-17 years olds, the issue is not access to education, but access to appropriate and quality education. Children with learning difficulties due to a range of social factors will be marginalised by the current system and will probably not graduate. These children could become a burden on our society without our help!

At Sparrow Schools our aim is to prepare youth with learning difficulties to become self-sufficient, responsible adults through appropriate, comprehensive education, vocational skills training and learner and psychosocial support initiatives.

How Can I Help?
For as little as R100 pm you can assist in providing education and support to children and youth experiencing life challenging socioeconomic difficulties and learning
difficulties.

Where does my money go?
Your sponsorship money is used to keep the school fees affordable for the learners. Many of the children are from places of safety, child headed households or disadvantaged homes where parents cannot afford the special care their children need. Sparrow Schools receives a minimal 10% government subsidy per child and a minimal 30% school fee from the learners. The remaining 60% per child needs to be funded.

When you subsidise learners you will receive the
following:

* Academic results
* Regular newsletters

The ‘Roots to Grow’ programme offers a way to subsidise the education of learners at our Foundation School, where learners aged 7-14 follow a specialised curriculum aimed at overcoming their learning difficulties. This includes language, numeracy, life orientation, PC literacy, media and music, as well as an introduction to  practical skills such as cooking, woodwork, creative design and technology and music & movement. Extensive learner support (remedial therapy) is also provided.

By subsidising their education you can follow their growth and provide them with a foundation that roots them for the future.

The ‘Wings to Fly’ programme offers a way to subsidise  education and skills training of the learners at our Sparrow FET College, which is the first FET College for marginalized youth with learning disabilities in the country.

The FET College caters to youth and includes English
literacy, maths literacy, basic business skills, computer
literacy, and life skills. Vocational skills training focuses on motor mechanics, welding, woodworking / cabinet-making, catering and clothing production. Whilst subsidising learners in this programme you may follow their job placement during their skills training and possibly after training to actually witness their ability to ultimately ‘fly alone’.
