Learner Support Unit

The Learner Support Unit (LSU) is the support given to the learners at both schools through different therapies. It was significantly expanded recently with more therapists allowing us to support more children and youth, taking into account that around 50% of the children and youth are orphans.

The LSU works with the University of Johannesburg, WITS and UNISA, whereby we access the expertise of professional therapists/counsellors and they access our Social Services Manager’s supervisory services, as well as having several full time staff in the form of therapists, psychologists and social workers. We work with tertiary students from various disciplines including social work, psychology, educational psychology and education.

A priority need was to have access to professional speech and hearing therapy and we were approached by WITS University to provide internship opportunities for some of their Speech Therapy students. Under supervision of an external professional these students work with learners individually or in small groups and they concentrate on speech defects and language enrichment. We also have a qualified Speech Therapist Audiologist.

The remedial therapists contribute to the individual learning process for many children and youth by providing individual and small group learner support in the therapy rooms and in-class and developing a media centre as well as a structured art programme which focuses on visual literacy.
